Roger Brown
Born
in Fort Worth, Texas in 1962, Roger Brown was raised on his family's ranch
near Fort McKavett in western Menard County. He grew up listening to his mother
play piano and organ in church, as well as her extensive record collection.
Among the artists Roger was influenced by at this early age included Bob
Wills, The Sons Of The Pioneers, Eddy Arnold, Johnny Horton and Johnny Cash,
as well as big bands such as Glenn Miller Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey. He
began playing piano and guitar while in grade school and wrote his first
songs at the age of 12. His first public performance was at age 14 and he
continued playing and writing songs throughout his high school years.
After graduating from Menard High School, Roger moved to Austin to attend the
University of Texas, and to participate in the thriving music scene there.
While in school he joined a local band as lead singer and did some recordings
that caught the attention of Monument Records, A&R man, Tex Davis and promotion
man Wayland "Stubby" Stubblefield. It was Davis and Stubblefield who
introduced Roger to successful Nashville songwriter Frank Dycus. The veteran
Dycus took the youngster under his wing and encouraged him to move to Nashville,
which he did in 1982 at the age of 20.
After a few years of paying his "dues" and working various jobs such
as bar- tending, selling insurance and doing music business public relations work,
Roger finally got his break with a Tanya Tucker recording of his song "Fool,
Fool Heart". It was this tune, co-written with Rick Peoples, which lead to
his first staff writing position at MCA Music in the fall of 1985.
Since that time, Roger Brown has been a full time staff writer for such companies
as Merit Music, Famous Music, Warner/Chappell Music and Acuff/Rose Music. The
list of artists who have recorded his songs include such diverse talents as George
Strait, Nanci Griffith, John Michael Montgomery, Barbara Streisand and many others.
In addition, he recorded a critically acclaimed five song CD for Decca Records
in 1996. This release, Roger Brown & Swing City, showcased the musical fusion
of all of his influences growing up in Texas. Roger currently has songs on the
new Patty Loveless and PBR albums.
